Christmas Decor Themes Made Easy

Updated: Dec 8, 2024

Hey DIY Bestie👋🏾

It’s officially 20 days until Christmas, and I don’t have a single piece of Christmas decor up. Let's face it, life gets busy and I’m not on retail time where I’m thinking of the next holiday three months in advance.

So, if you’re like me and you’re just now thinking about what to put up for Christmas, then keep reading!

In today's blog, we’re going to talk about how to choose a color palette or theme for your Christmas decor. Just last year, I started going with a Christmas theme, and it was a game-changer! Narrowing down a color scheme and the “look” made the process so much smoother. For instance, last year my family and I decided to go with a Christmas Classic “Home Alone” theme. Since this film originated in 1990, the color palette was traditional Christmas decor with plaid, red, green, white, and gold. Having this palette in mind gave me a clear direction for DIY'ing the perfect holiday decor. This approach not only made planning stress-free but also brought the nostalgic magic of “Home Alone” to life. If you’re new here, let me introduce myself. My name is Renita, but you can call me Nita. I’m a DIYer! (Cue the audience response, Hi Nita, welcome to DIY'ers Anonymous 🤣). Now that we’re all acquainted, let’s jump into the colors that brought the "Home Alone" theme to life and set the stage for my holiday decorating.

The “Home Alone” Color Scheme

To capture the essence of “Home Alone,” I leaned into its iconic 1990s vibe. The color scheme included:

  • Red: Vibrant pops of color that feel festive and cozy.

  • Green: A grounding hue that’s essential for Christmas.

  • Gold: Adds warmth and a touch of elegance.

  • Plaid: A nostalgic nod to the movie’s traditional feel.

  • White: Snowy accents that tie everything together.

Having this color palette in mind made shopping and DIY-ing so much easier. Let me show you how I used it to create a festive and cohesive look for my home.

Hot Cocoa Bar: A Festive Focal Point

One of my favorite spots to decorate is my hot cocoa bar. It’s a must-have in my house, and I had so much fun making it Home Alone inspired! Here’s how I incorporated the color palette:

  • Plaid placemats: These served as a base layer to add color and protect against spills.

  • Faux garland and a mini tree trinket: For a pop of green.

  • Gold spoons: A warm, elegant touch that made the setup feel extra special.

  • Mini wooden house: A cute nod to the McCallister home.

The end result was a charming cocoa station that felt both nostalgic and festive—perfect for sipping hot chocolate while watching Kevin outwit the Wet Bandits!

With the cocoa bar ready to go, it was time to take the festive spirit outside and carry the "Home Alone" theme to the porch.

Bringing “Home Alone” to Life with DIY Decor

Moving to the porch, I went all out with my Home Alone theme. Here’s how I brought the vision to life:

  • Hand-painted doormat: I created a “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal” doormat that instantly set the tone.

  • Hanging paint cans: I used clear plastic lightweight paint cans filled with red and green streamer paper—a playful nod to Kevin’s creative traps.

  • DIY battle plan: Inspired by Kevin’s iconic strategy map, I recreated a miniature version as part of the decor.

  • Buzz’s pet tarantula: A Dollar Tree spider from Halloween decor worked perfectly for this!

  • Plush cheese pizza: A fun thrifted touch referencing Kevin’s love for cheese pizza.

  • Other props: Items like a feather and fan trap, and a Little Nero’s pizza box rounded out the look.

This porch setup was a huge hit with neighbors and guests—a mix of whimsy and nostalgia that captured the magic of “Home Alone.”

With last years ‘Home Alone’ theme in the books, it's time to start brainstorming for this year’s holiday decor.

What’s the Theme for This Year?

Now that I’ve shared last years Home Alone decor journey, it’s time to decide on this year’s theme...After much thought, I’ve landed on a Colorful Nutcracker theme! This year’s palette will include:

  • Pink: A playful and modern twist.

  • Teal: Adds vibrancy and uniqueness.

  • Red & Green: The traditional Christmas staples.

  • White, Silver, & Silver: For balance and sparkle.

I can’t wait to dive into creating decor that captures the whimsy and charm of the Nutcracker—and of course, I’ll share all my DIYs and bargain finds along the way. Stay tuned!

I’d love to hear about your holiday plans and the themes that inspire you. Share your ideas in the comments—I can’t wait to see what you’re all creating

Until next time, Happy DIY'ing and Merry Christmas! 🎄✌🏾
